If you’ve ever had back pain, it’s likely you understand how it can drain you both physically and mentally. Sitting, standing, lying down – nothing feels comfortable.

Even simple tasks like driving to the grocery store become efforts, requiring you to draw on mind over matter.

We live in a culture where we crave instant relief so we can dive back into the activities we love or just make it through the day without wincing.

We live in a culture in which being a person who has to take one or more of the 246 million workdays lost annually to back pain can affect both professional and personal life.

Relief from back pain can be elusive, especially when pursuing drug-free solutions. With all the fitness, health and wellness trends that have come and gone, you might be reluctant to believe the promise that a new gadget can help you.

That’s understandable. Maybe you used the Covid 19 shutdown to rid yourself of that Thigh Master you used twice and the never-opened salt lamp that was supposed to purify and energize your world. (Remember? Those things were going to transform your life!)

However, there is an FDA approved product on the market that costs less than a physical therapy appointment – and is easier to use than an inversion table – that might be worth investigating if you’re one of the majority of adults who have been plagued at one time or another with low back pain.

It’s called the Lo-Bak TRAX Portable Spinal Traction Device.

What is the Lo-Bax Trax?

The unassuming tool basically looks like a set of bicycle handlebars that come to a V-shape at the bottom. There are a couple of strategically placed pads below the handles.

The idea is that you lie on the ground with your knees bent to flatten out your back. You place the V base between your legs. The two padded parts rest on the top of your thighs, near your hips.

You hold the handlebars and push the pads against your upper thighs for a dozen seconds at a time to self-administer traction and decompression for your lower back.

The Lo-Bak TRAX system is unique. Instead of exerting pulling traction as many tools and decompression methods do, Lo-Bak TRAX opens space in your spine by using a pushing action, instead of pulling, to elongate your back and relieve compression.

In addition, you are the master of how much traction you administer. If it is too much, you can easily back off. You don’t have to yelp at a therapist when you’ve had enough.

You don’t have to allocate a special room to use this device like you might need to do with larger inversion tables and the like. It is a very simple, easy tool to try out.

How to Use the Lo-Bak Trax

It does not take much time to get the benefit of the Lo-Bak Trax – just 10 minutes from start to finish. You can push the device on your upper thighs for 10-15 seconds from 4 to 6 times during one session a day. Relax in between for as long as you need.

It is intended for use whenever you want, wherever you find a little space. You are supposed to be able to use it while your back is bothering you or as a preventative when you feel fine. That’s all well and good, but will it work for you?

Does the Lo-Bak Trax Work?

Lo-Bak TRAX is advertised as being able to safely address back pain caused by several conditions, such as sciatica, muscle spasms, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, general lower back pain, and degenerative joint disease of the spine.

However, even though this is deemed a class 1 medical device, your doctor, physical therapist, or medical caregiver can tell you if it is the right time for you to try at home spinal decompression/traction with a tool like this.

If you’ve had recent surgery, you might need to heal up first. If you have an acute problem or an undiagnosed condition, it is always best to go to your doctor and have things checked out. Back problems, although ubiquitous, are nothing to mess around with since the spinal column protects important nerves.

Keep in mind that all bodies and all back issues are not created the same. The size of the device generally fits most individuals. It is lightweight and has padding in the right places. But, there is always the chance that it might not fit your body quite right.

The other caveat is that you have to be able to get up and down off the floor in order to use it. That might not sound like a big problem but when you are in the midst of back pain getting up and down off of the floor can be difficult. The device can be used on a bed if necessary.

A soft bed will not provide the same stability as the floor though. Lying on a bed while using it will not necessarily render the same amount of traction as lying on a less-yielding surface.

Finally, the device provides stretch and creates space by drawing your hips down toward your feet away from the naval. This might relieve back pain in some individuals. But, it might actually aggravate other people’s backs more. In addition, people with hand, neck or other joint issues might not be comfortable using joints in the upper body to generate the pushing action needed to initiate the decompressing push.

Should You Buy the Lo-Bak Trax?

When it comes to back pain, most individuals are willing to explore a variety of remedies. If your medical provider gives you the go-ahead, spending fewer than 40-bucks on a Lo-Bak TRAX is a pretty small investment in something that could bring you a lot of pain relief.

Ideally, the tool could allow you to independently address some of your mobility issues at home and provide an extra way to target what can be life-altering pain.

However, it should also be noted that the decompression devices alone might relieve some pain for patients, but it is unlikely to be the one-and-only answer to what tends to be complex joint, muscle, ligament, and tendon problems spurred on by poor body mechanics, muscular imbalances or serious degenerative conditions that need other interventions.

If you are considering buying one, note that the Lo-Bak Trax is made with solid metal, so it is very durable. It comes in different colors. That obviously does not affect the function of the device, but you might be more likely to keep it in a handy, accessible place if you choose a color that doesn’t make you queasy!

Who knows – perhaps a pink set of handlebar-looking thingies just might mesh perfectly with your eclectic dining room décor. Realistically, though, it will fit in most closets if you want to hide it away when not in use.

Wrapping Up Our Lo-Bak Trax Review

The bottom line is that treatment for many common back pain complaints often includes a decompression component. The Lo-Bak TRAX might be able to provide easy at-home decompression for some individuals at a fair cost.

However approach with caution so you don’t exacerbate your issues. Keep in mind that there are other non-drug interventions that should be considered as well to increase the effectiveness of at-home care.

Stretching and strength training can complement devices like Lo-Bak TRAX. There are even free (really good) yoga videos out there that focus on relieving back pain, like this Yoga by Adrienne session, and Pilates series, like this one by The American Council on Exercise.

It might be that simple lifestyle changes – like standing every hour for a few minutes, or lying with your feet up on a chair – can get you to a pain-free point.

The bottom line is that there are many, many folks out there working to make sure that you know they have your back. The Lo-Bak TRAX people are some of them!

Do your homework. Understand your particular condition. Explore your options when it comes to exercise, lifestyle and devices. The affordable, durable and rather unique Lo-Bak TRAX might give you the “aha” and “ahhhhs” you seek.

What if I don’t feel the stretch in my lower back but in my mid back?

If your lower back is extremely tight, then the middle back is the first area to start to move or stretch. With consistent use, the low back area will start to stretch and the traction force will be felt more in the low back after 3 weeks.

Another problem could be that you have the thigh contact placed too close to the knees while pushing. Make sure the thigh contact is as close to the groin as possible.

Why are my hand grips rotating?

The hand grips freely rotate by design. This helps keep them from being deformed and ensuring you’re pressing at the correct angle.

What do I do if I don’t feel the traction in the right spot?

Try adjusting your feet position, wrist position, or thigh contact placement. Everyone’s body will respond differently to the Lo-Bak Trax and you’ll need some tweaks to get the response you want.

Should I use a pillow under my back while using the Lo-Bak Trax?

No, you won’t get a good affect by placing a pillow under you while using the device. Your back should be flat on a firm surface for optimal results.

Can I use the Lo-Bak Trax more than once per day?

As long as you’re not experiencing pain while using the device, you can use the device multiple times per day as needed for back pain relief.
